We recently put up this question on Facebook and Twitter, "Should bowling be an Olympic Sport?" A resounding number of people replied yes to our question, but what type of impact would placing bowling in the Olympics have on the sport. In 1992 the sport of basketball was showcased on an international stage at the Barcelona Olympics and the effects of the Dream Team are still felt twenty years later. When the Dream Team went to the 1992 games in Barcelona they had three of the greatest players of all-time and all but one member of the team would end up being in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Everywhere they went they were treated like royalty and even opposing teams wanted autographs and photos of the U.S.A. Basketball Team in 1992. The competition was completely overmatched and the Dream Team cruised to a gold medal win. The other nations of the world were not ready for the NBA players at the time, but if you fast forward to basketball and the current state that it is found in you will see the heavy influence of players from all over the world. Many basketball historian attribute the current level of solid international competition back to the 1992 Dream Team. So, what correlations can we make between bowling now and basketball in 1992.
Bowling for the FutureIf in 20 years the sport of bowling were in the Olympics and represented by the vast majority of countries that would signify a great movement for the sport of bowling. If bowling were to be added to the Olympic lineup of sports it would give the great players of today the opportunity to show there talents to the world. Not only would you be showcasing the best bowlers in the world you'd be showcasing one of the best sports in the world. It's a sport that almost anyone can play whether you're young or old and by being in the Olympics other countries would be more likely to pick up the sport. With a growth in general interest in the sport would come a greater collection of talented bowlers, making for a more talented and competitive PBA. With a deeper more talented professional league that would surely include more international players the sport could grow by leaps and bounds. A future with more people bowling is a better future and having bowling as an Olympic Sport could make that a reality.
