Do You Need a Wrist Support?

Some people use wrist supports and some people don't. What is the purpose of using one vs not using one? How does it help our bowling game? Who normally needs the wrist support the most? These will be some of the topics we will get into in this article regarding wrist supports.

The purpose of using a wrist support is exactly why it has the name it does; it supports your wrist. Some of us do not either have the right technique or the strength to get our wrist in the correct spot on the bowling ball at release point. The Wrist Support helps to keep us from breaking (not literally) our wrist at release point. When you can keep your wrist firm at the bottom of your swing it helps at least get you in the correct spot to release/rotate the ball correctly.

How does the wrist support help your bowling game? Like I previously stated, it helps keep your wrist firm throughout the shot. It also helps get your wrist to a lower position on the ball at release point. This will help increase your rev rate as well. Which means more hook! Sometimes more hook is not always a good thing but usually on the house shot it does tend to help more than hurt. More hook on the house shot allows you to move inside of everyone else and bank off their lines. Thus more room for error through out the night.

Wrist supports are generally used by people with weak wrists. Young children getting involved in the game of bowling sometimes use a wrist support until they get bigger and stronger. Unfortunately when we get older we also get weaker, so with that being said, a wrist support may be needed. Women also may use a wrist support as well just because their wrists tend to be weaker, but that doesn't mean men don't use/need a wrist support. So the wrist support is used by every gender and age. Not everyone may need one though. It depends on the strength in your wrist, if you are able to hold your wrist in the correct position at release, and for some it is just a comfort thing.

Get with a local coach or pro shop person to help analyze your game, and see whether a wrist support will help your game or not. Again a wrist support may not be needed in your game but then again maybe it will help. To recap quickly, the wrist support is to help keep your wrist firm throughout the shot. The wrist support will also help get your hand in the correct position at release point to help increase rev rate. Remember to enjoy the game of bowling and always Practice, Practice, Practice!
