Black Pearl Urethane
I was extremely pleased with the reaction of the new Black Pearl Urethane 78D. I don't use Urethane very often, however I drilled this piece for the PBA50 Caveman Bowl Classic to have to blend out the Wayne Webb pattern. This piece did not disappoint as I used it for 17 of the 21 games of the tournament. I was able to play far right and the ball never quit on me. It has a much better reaction for me than the purple. Thank you Black Pearl Urethane for helping me win PBA Regional title #5. Get yours today, you will not be dissatisfied. It has a special place in my arsenal.

78 hardness Black Hammer
The answer to the Pba‘s urethane band is here 78 hardness black hammer pearl. If you don’t bowl PBA events and like throwing Urethane is will be a great ball for you. It doesn’t hook as much as the purple so this is the perfect ball down from the purple. If you’re bowling the PBA this is a great replacement for the purple your only going to be about 2 or 3 boards right of where you would start with the purple.

Black Pearl Urethane
I drilled my 78D Black Pearl Urethane with a 50 x 4 x 25 pin up layout. This is the same layout that I used on my Purple Pearl Urethane. The 78D rolls as close to the 80's urethane, for me, out of the new age urethanes. In comparison to my Purple, the 78D is noticeably weaker, approx. 4 boards. This ball will be fantastic on shorter sport patterns!

Pros:
early rolling, controllable, smooth
Cons:
floods, long patterns
Best Uses:
short patterns, sport shots, medium length medium volume patterns

78D means domination!!
I drilled the much-anticipated Hammer 78D Black Pearl urethane to be a little weaker version of the legendary Purple Pearl Urethane. I put my favorite urethane layout on this one, 4” x 25 to get a true baseline read of what this ball does. I use my urethane exclusively on sport shots, and this one really shines when you want to play straighter, or close to the gutter. The 78D Black Pearl urethane is about 1-2 feet longer than the Purple Pearl urethane, and 3-4 boards less. The shape is a little more angular, or at least as angular as urethane can be, which is still way less than resin alternatives. I have used the 78D Black Pearl on Cheetah 35’, Alcatraz 38’, and Aalborg 35'. I have found that when they are fresh this ball shines, I put it down to 360 grit and it rolls and picks up fantastically. The cover takes to surface changes well, as I have used it from 360 up to 2000 with no issues at all. As the lanes transition and this ball doesn’t see enough friction through the mid-lane to carry like it has been doing so well, that is when I switch to my Purple Pearl urethane, move 2-3 in with my feet, and use that extra angle to get the corner pins out with the stronger ball. The 78D Black Pearl urethane is the PERFECT compliment to the Purple Pearl urethane, and if you bowl a lot of sport patterns like I do, it is well worth having this one in your bag. its urethane?

Straight Heavy Roller
Have mine drilled pin down/control. There is no skid, hook, then roll phase, just ROLL, and I mean it rolls!! As soon as it hits the lane, it rolls heavy, and ain't nothin gonna stop it either! Good night sleepers!! 4/10s this thing just steam rolls them. for me from left ditch at a 4/10 15# ball just right threw the 4 to the 10 ZERO deflection, wash outs? no problem. Remember lining up when you were 10 and throwing that straight ball at the pocket or maybe you got that slight smooth arching hook from that Rhino, took me back to 2nd grade. I cant believe I've never had or used urethane until now!

Hammer 78D Pearl
As most know, the Hammer Black Pearl 78D Urethane formally was announced recently. For the record, the Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane is still legal in all competition except PBA events. For those who do bowl in PBA events and want a compare and contrast among the Purple Pearl, the NU and the 78D, here you go. I tested all three on fresh house shot and I drilled each of these with the same layout- 40 x 3 3/4 x 10. They all have the same surafce. (I used 500 Siaair.) In terms of a compare/contrast, the Purple Pearl is clearly the earliest and strongest of the urethane options, the NU is a little longer and a touch quicker and the 78D is the weakest in terms of motion of the 3 options. My sense is that the Hammer 78D urethane serves its purpose for the slow response type of motion to control a fresh lane, especially shorter sport patterns. However, because it is the weakest of the Hammer urethane options in terms of overall hook potential, I suspect that not only will I need to be more direct in terms of angles but that I will need to switch out of the 78D in a tournament situation more quickly than I would from a Purple.
See your local pro shop for more information on the Hammer Black Pearl 78D Urethane.

I'm a 190 average guy. Out of the box I shot 247, 224, 255 for a career high 726. Loved how easy it was to control a how hard it hit the pins.

Pros:
Similar to the purple hammer
Cons:
Needs a lot of surface, don't be afraid to hit it with 360 or lower
Best Uses:
PBA Competition

A Must Have for (PBA) Competition
As a PBA member, I anxiously awaited this ball. I throw 15-lb. equipment and recently had a lot of success with this ball at a PBA event. It is different than the Purple Hammer, and it should be given its hardness. However, that’s pretty much where the differences end.
This ball needs a lot of surface to create a similar shape as the Purple Hammer. Don’t be afraid to hit with the 360 or lower grit sanding pad to get the ball to start up earlier. Urethane does have a different shape than reactive and you want a urethane ball to start up earlier.
This ball allows you to play more up the boards or straighter on the lane. It also helps you keep the ball in play. Use it on shorter-length patterns or on high-friction lane surfaces where you want the ball to slow down a bit.
If you are competing in PBA competition, you will absolutely want to have this ball (or two of them) in your bag. If you love the Purple Hammer, this is a great companion to that ball!
Customer Questions & Answers | Reviews
Question:
I have a purple urethane hammer, and it hooks too much for me due to a slower ball speed. Would this be a good step down from the purple hammer?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
The Hammer Black Pearl Urethane is going to have a very close overall hook potential to the Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane. The Black Pearl will have a weaker weight block but it comes out of the box with a duller finish so the overall FCC rating that Hammer gives makes the Black Pearl 14 and the Purple Pearl 14.5 which is a very small difference. Have you tried adjusting the finish on your Purple Urethane to a smoother grit and possibly adding polish? That may give you more length on that ball and take off some of the overall hook potential.

Question:
How does this hammer black pearl compare with the hammer nu blue hammer on dry lanes... low rev low speed bowler
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
Hammer has the FCC rating system which will show a good comparison of the Finish, Core, and Cover. The FCC for the Black Pearl is Total- 14, Finish- 10, Core- 2, Cover- 2 and the FCC for the NU Blue is Total- 16.75, Finish- 9.5, Core- 3.75, Cover- 3.5. So the Black Pearl will give you a little less overall hook potential than the NU Blue if you needed something for very dry conditions.

Question:
Black hammer vs purple hammer for a two handed cranker? I have a purple hammer but I believe it's illegal in tournament play. How would this compare to a purple hammer?
Have an answer to this question?
Answer:
Hammer has an FCC rating to show the strength and hook potential based on the Finish, Core, and Coverstock. The Black Hammer FCC rating is Total- 14, Finish- 10, Core- 2, Cover- 2 so almost all of the hook potential is from the duller finish. The Purple Hammer FCC rating is Total- 14.5, Finish- 9, Core- 2, Cover- 3.5 which would also indicate the finish is a large factor in the performance but also the coverstock is a little stronger. Overall the performance and hook potential will be pretty close (14 - 14.5). You may see the Black Hammer read just slightly earlier but should be a close substitute for your Purple Hammer. There is also a newer Purple Hammer that has met with the USBC standards so if you have the newer version it would be cleared for tournament play.
